I recently started volunteering at the LA County Museum of Art (otherwise known as LACMA), and as part of our training, we get private tours of certain collections in the museum. As an art history major, I usually call works from the Renaissance to Post-Impressionism my favorites, and I've never much been interested in Modern Art (though most of my traditional art tends to fall in that category more than any other), but today we toured LACMA's Modern Art collection. And I have to say, I have never loved art as much as I do right now. For some reason, I left that gallery feeling so...inspired and alive. And while I'm not going to pretend that I left understanding what makes three red rectangles and one white one on a canvas beautiful (a la Mark Rothko's "White Center"), I definitely left with a much stronger appreciation of the more recent developments in art. And I'm definitely looking forward to learning more in my Modern and Contemporary Art History class this spring
